General news about The Micro 3D

The Micro is still the most compact 3d printer on the market. However, I started to believe that the reason other people didn't design their printers in the same or similar way is that this design is not practical for low cost printers.

For example, we have seen problems in z axis. This is most likely caused by its belt-driven 4-leadscrew approach for z-axis mechanism. Most 3d printers use single leadscrew z-axis mechanism that moves the print bed. a few use 2-leadscrew mechanism with 2 stepper motors driving individual z-axis leadscrews separately. These two approaches give relatively good z-aix motion performance. In the design of The Micro the z-axis mechanism consists of 4 leadscrews driven by one motor with timing belt and pulleys. It usually has worse z-axis motion performance due to lack of good motion synchronization among four leadscrews. It also introduces bigger backlash which adds more problems as The Micro does auto-leveling by dynamic z-axis adjustment.

The another issue in this design is the location of y-axis motor. To save the space the motor is mounted on the print head. This increases the weight of entire moving structure and, with the given power, results in slower printing speed and bigger tracing error...

Needless to say, these issues are not easy to get resolved without going back to the drawing board :(
